PLEASE NOTE: Unlike Jazzway 6004, which is a not-for-profit venue, Pizzeria Venti is a commercial venue.  Therefore it is required that a minimum number of tickets be sold in order for the show to go forward.  If a minimum number of tickets are not sold by a certain date, the management cannot guarantee the availability of the venue and the show must be cancelled.  Nobody wants this, so I urge you to purchase your tickets by Wednesday of the week of the show in order to guarantee that the show goes on and that the series will continue.  For the December 3^rd show with the Sharon Clark Quartet, that means a minimum number of tickets must be purchased by November 30^th.  Sharon Clark is a word class performer and so are her instrumentalists – Vince Evans, Michael Bowie and Lenny Robinson.  This is a rare opportunity to see them perform together.

What’s New at Jazzway 6004

Our third benefit for the Creative Alliance on October 29^th hit a home run! Our master chef Dan Casucci was in great form serving up dishes like duck confit, and truffled mushroom crostini, wine braised short ribs, rockfish oregonato and lentil croquettes, healthy sides galore  and a vast array of homemade desserts!  Many, many thanks to all our volunteers – we couldn’t have done it without you!

The Joni Mitchell Tribute sold out and turned out to be one of the most popular concerts we’ve presented at Jazzway.  Patrons remarked that this was the best CA fundraiser yet, and many told me with tears in their eyes that they were virtually transported back to their younger years and vivid personal memories associated with their favorite Joni tune. The project was brought to life through the brilliant talents of Alan Blackman (who did much of the arranging), Craig Alston, Eric Kennedy, Michael Raitzyk and Jeff Reed.  We’ve been invited to take the concert to other venues in the area, so stay tuned while we refine and retune the show and start presenting it around town from about March 2012 on, culminating in a recording. I’ll be working on my new website too to keep everyone better informed about my upcoming concerts, new CD (finally!) and other news.

Pizzeria Venti!  As you can see from our website, we are now partnering with Pizzeria Venti in Alexandria, Virginia to present more jazz in alternate locations. We expect to schedule at least 1 concert every other month at the new venue.  Our partner at the Pizzeria is Angela Lacey and her contact info can be found on each of our event listings for Pizzeria Venti .  Our first concert at Pizzeria Venti featured the masterful Craig Alston Quartet on October 8^th and we had a great turnout!  The Tim Green Quartet is featured next on November 19^th.  And sublime vocalist Sharon Clark and her all-star trio finish out this year at Pizzeria Venti on Saturday, December 3^rd.  Another Pizzeria Venti location is scheduled to open early next year in DC and we will be featuring jazz at that location, so watch our website for upcoming details.

On December 17^th we are back at Jazzway 6004 in Baltimore with the George Colligan Trio and his special guest Tim Green.

New ticketing system – We have recently changed from  Brown Paper Tickets, headquartered in Seattle to Instant Seats, which is DC based which offers more local promotion opportunities and convenience.  This system allows you to print out your own tickets on-line. Tickets will also be available at the door (for Pizzeria Venti only), but unfortunately no phone sales are offered, and cash must be paid at the door, but we plan to add a credit card payment option at the door within the next few  months.

Attention – All Artists who wish to submit for the upcoming Jazzway 6004 season (2010-2011) and beyond.

I know… we are way behind, BUT our 6 person selection panel will be selecting the artists to perform at the Jazzway 6004, 2010-2011 season (and possibly the 2011-2012 season) during the month of September 2010.  We will be accepting artist submittals through September 24th. 

We must have written information as well as sound clips.  Therefore submittals must be in the form of:  websites, MySpace or Facebook pages (containing sound clips), electronic press kits (EPK) or printed material with sound clip attachments.  These should be e-mailed to: mmkatz@jazzway6004.org and PLEASE put the following in the message subject Line: Jazzway 6004 Artist Submittal for ____ (Your Name or Your Band's Name)

It’s hard to believe that we are entering the 4th season of Jazzway 6004 in September 2010.  We’ve really grown and evolved since we first started in June 2007 with my tribute to the great Billie Holiday.  We never expected Jazzway 6004 to take off the way it did and we’ve struggled to keep up and learn how to make it better, more efficient and to get the word out.  Although it’s been a huge amount of work and organization, and continues to be, the series remains a true labor of love for us. 

As a not-for –profit, even in a small venue, we are committed to offering musicians an honorable wage for their skilled and heartfelt performances - a tribute to their hard work, experience and dedication to their craft.  I believe we’ve had some measure of success in bringing new audiences to jazz – some folks who may have previously stayed away from jazz because they thought they needed a set of previously developed skills to appreciate the genre.  One of our many goals has been  to offer  every demographic,  every experience level,  students, musicians, music lovers  and anyone with mind and heart open to music appreciation, a place to come together,  relax, socialize, listen and appreciate this music and these wonderful musicians.  In short, we’ve tried to construct a nurturing musical community.

I hope to see all of you back this year and look forward to many new faces as well.  We plan to continue to offer the best in local jazz and some outstanding national and regional artists as well. Thank you to all the musicians, volunteers  and patrons – YOU are responsible for making  Jazzway 6004 the wonderful environment it is!

A NOTE TO SUBMITTING ARTISTS:  Our selection committee will be selecting our artists for the 4^th season, within the next two weeks, so if you are interested in submitting a package, we will have instructions posted on our blog in the next few days.  We already have dozens of submittals, (somewhere around 85!)  and very few slots, so please don’t be discouraged if you don’t get selected this year because there’s a good chance you’ll be considered for the next season.   We are also trying to expand our presentations to other venues around town, so there may be additional opportunities there.

What we have coming up : We are opening the 4^th season of Jazzway on September 25^th with one of the best  up and coming jazz  vocalist on the scene, the young and dynamic,  Rachael  Price.  I became a fan of Rachael’s several years ago and have been hounding our mutual acquaintance Warren Wolf (vibraphonist, drummer, and pianist extraordinaire – he plays piano regularly for Rachael) to bring her to Jazzway 6004, ever since.   I think she has one of the most clearly identifiable and unique sounds I’ve heard in a very long time.  Every time I play her music for friends, they say – WOW, what a voice – WHO is that?  I believe you’ll be seeing her pick up Grammys in the future and we are very fortunate to have her visit us in Baltimore and perform in our intimate space - up close and personal.

In October we have scheduled The Creative Alliance “Art to Dine For” Benefit on Saturday October 9^th at 6:00 PM.  Our theme is Rebirth of the Cool! And we’ll be featuring  music and cuisine from the 1960’s  with  dishes from Mastering the Art of French Cooking (released in 1961) and an array of cool and pop jazz from the 1960’s including  tunes by Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Dave Brubeck, Nat Adderly, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Horace Silver and Burt Bacharach.
