What an exciting show!! Ralph was the master bandleader and his young players had one of the most unique sounds we've heard. Ralph is another good example of a mentor that inspires his young students and players - teaching them the tradition but encouraging them to develop their own sound while making their interpretations of jazz relevant to the present! Felix Peikli, Joseph Doubleday and Alex Toth were stunning performers - and adding Todd Marcus to the mix for the last 4 tunes bumped it up a big notch!! Thanks to all the players for creating such a memorable night and to the patrons (we had a sold out crowd!!) who showed their respect an appreciation for the music!! You'll never know how much your encourage these musicians!

Winard Harper Harper and Jeli Posse - true heros of Jazz!

The audience was completely blown away by the charismatic Winard Harper and his outstanding group, Jeli Posse. We've had so many great concerts at Jazzway, but this was one of our most special. So many folks came up and said it was one of the most enjoyable (if not THE best) concerts we've presented. Winard is such a beautiful soul and his virtuosity and happiness permeated the room. Watching the interplay between Winard and his equally joyful and musically outstanding band members was completely infectious and delighted the audience! A wonderful quote that was posted to his webpage recently sums it up:

“Most of us know that this music is profound; even apocalyptic at times. However, it is so often approached on such a casual social and commercial level, we tend to ignore and overlook the stirrings within our souls and the voices of our ancestral ‘spirits’ that remind us of the fact, that there is a revelation of certain prophetic dimensions inherent in this music.”
–Doug Carn

Everyone will remember this concert for a long time. And I am committed to bringing Winard and his group back. The dedication he shows to his young players in teaching them to revere the tradition of the past great ones, while encouraging them to be bold and modern in their innovative approaches, makes him one of our nation's most precious heroes of jazz!

If you want to experience the joy for yourself - visit Winard's Facebook page and purchase a copy of his autographed CD, Coexist :

http://www.facebook.com/#!/WinardHarperJazz/app_189977524185

What's New?

Pizzeria Venti! We are now partnering with Pizzeria Venti in Alexandria, Virginia to present more jazz in alternate locations. We expect to schedule 1 concert a month at the new venue. Our partner at Pizzeria is Angela Lacey and her contact info can be found on each of our event listings for Pizzeria Venti . Our first concert at Pizzeria Venti featured the masterful Craig Alston Quartet on October 8th and we had a great turnout! We hope for many more successes at this location and thank the management for being so accommodating and embracing live music! Our next concert at Pizzeria Venti will feature The Tim Green Quartet on November 19th.

Downloadable fliers – Go to our calendar and check out our downloadable fliers. We have created an option on the website for you to download a flier for any one of our currently listed calendar events. Now you can conveniently download Jazzway 6004 and Pizzeria Venti event info wherever you are!

New ticketing system – Change is difficult. But we decided that changing from Brown Paper Tickets, headquartered in Seattle to Instant Seats, which is DC based would offer more local promotion opportunities and be more convenient for patrons, and musicians alike. This system will allow you to print out your own tickets on-line and tickets will also be available at the door (for Pizzeria Venti only). Unfortunately no phone sales are offered, and cash must be paid at the door, but we plan to add a credit card payment option at the door within the next two months. We are still working out the bugs and learning the system, but we expect that this will turn out to be a more efficient and flexible option for taking payments and for getting the word out.
